I was raised by old school parents. When they asked, well more like told, you to do something, they not only expected it to be done but also expected it to be done well. Especially my mom. Risa Bell did not play when it came to certain things. Her natural character was very chill, slow to get angry. But certain things could get her goats to going very quickly. One of those certain things was doing something half-hearted. My dad, Mr. Jeff affectionately called it half-butt (except he used a word that begins with an “a” and ends with an “s”) Both my parents believed if you are to do something, anything at all, do it well. One of the many sermons I received on this subject was exampled by a street sweeper. My parents would say “I don’t care if you are a street sweeper, be the best street sweeper you can possibly be.” I slowly learned this lesson over the years after having to repeat and re-do several tasks. Now in my older age, it comes naturally second nature even.
I didn’t know it at the time, but my parents’ teaching was Scriptural.
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. Colossians 3:23 (ESV)
This verse clearly encourages us to do all things whether at work or at home to the best of our abilities. Completing tasks no matter what those tasks are should be performed in the spirit of excellence. Your motivation for excellence should come from your desire to please, serve, and honor Elohim, your Father. It’s nice to receive compliments from people who recognize your efforts; however, that shouldn’t be your driving goal. Knowing that you have the approval of the One Who sees all and Who rewards according to our efforts far outweighs the accolades from people.
When you are at work whether working for a company or working as a self-employed business owner, remember Colossians 3:23 and work heartily. The word heartily means you give it your all. It means you give your work tasks your full attention and effort. Not only do you work heartily, but your presence should also be heartily as well, meaning your attitude is checked. You approach your job with enthusiasm and a sense of dedication. Don’t bring negativity into your space and surely do not allow complaining to show up.
When you serve the Body of Christ, whether teacher, preacher, evangelist, or missionary, serve as an outstanding representative of the Kingdom. You were gifted in your individual giftings for the uplifting and elevation of Elohim’s people. Your gifts are not your own. Freely you have received so freely give accordingly. Serve with compassion knowing that everything you do is being evaluated by Him. Please do not let your goal be to please people or earn the praise of people. Confirm in your spirit that your one and only goal is the honor your Father.
In our everyday dealings with people, we need to remember to work heartily in our conversations. Whether you are a stay-at-home wife, a teacher, an accountant, or a homeless person it does not matter, your actions and your conversations either honor or dishonor God. As Believers of the Most High, our working heartily mandate is daily and all day. We cannot allow ourselves to take a break from serving Christ through our work and this includes our conversations and how we treat people. I sincerely believe treating people compassionately is a form of worship to the Lord.
If you are a street sweeper, be the best one. If you are a truck driver, be the best one. If you are a mother, be the best one. Whatever you have chosen to do as a profession or as a form of ministry and serving, be the best one. If someone thanks you, that’s fine. If you are unappreciated, that’s fine too. Just know that your reward comes from Elohim. You will receive an inheritance!
