Let’s talk about something that’s small but mighty: consistency. We all know that staying consistent isn’t always easy. Whether it’s sticking to an exercise routine, showing up for work, or even carving out quiet time for yourself, it takes a bit of effort and a lot of reminders.
But here’s the thing—consistency is what bridges the gap between where you are and where you want to be. It’s those tiny, steady steps that eventually lead to big results.
The Bible even says in Galatians 6:9 (NIV): “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Think about that for a minute. It’s telling us not to get tired of doing what’s right or good, because in due time, it’ll pay off. That’s what consistency is all about—sticking with it, even when you’re not seeing the payoff yet.
Another way to think about it is when something is consistent, it’s the same no matter what. Just like how the Bible says in Hebrews 13:8: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Jesus is consistent. We can count on Him, knowing He’s steady and unchanging. He is the same.
This idea of “sameness” is seen in everyday life too. Think about your favorite fast-food spot. If you order a burger from Wendy’s in Hawaii, it should taste the same as it does from a Wendy’s in Florida. That’s because they follow the same recipe and methods to make sure that no matter where you are, you’re getting the same quality and taste. That’s consistency.
Or take your favorite coffee spot—whether you order a latte in your hometown or across the country, you expect it to taste just as creamy and delicious. That’s because they’re consistent in how they make it. It is so disappointing to taste a sip of your favorite coffee prepared in an inconsistent manner. And all the coffee drinkers said AMEN!
It’s the same with our habits, routines, and even our relationships. When we’re consistent, people know what to expect from us. We’re reliable. We’re trustworthy. It’s a little like being that burger that tastes the same in Hawaii and Florida—people can count on us!
Of course, we’re not perfect (and that’s okay). But just like those businesses work hard to make sure their food tastes the same, we can keep working to be steady in our lives too showing up for ourselves and the people around us.
To further clarify, consistency doesn’t mean perfection. It means you’re showing up again and again. Think of it like planting seeds. If you keep watering them, they’ll eventually grow. But if you stop watering them after a few days, they’ll probably wither away. Consistency is continuing to act even when there is no obvious result.
So, here’s your little nudge today and it’s also a nudge for me: KEEP GOING! Keep showing up, keep writing, keep studying, keep giving. I tell myself this many times you don’t have to be perfect you just have to be present. One day, you’ll look back and see how far you’ve come. Doing one good thing consistently is well worth more than starting 100 good things and never finishing any of them.
And remember—just like your favorite burger should taste the same wherever you go, you should be steady, unswerving, and stable no matter where life takes you. Sometimes it’s the little foxes that get us off course. Consistency in a person’s standards should hold the same weight as honorable, gentle, trustworthy, etc. Consistency is not as popular as other standards and codes of living, but it is just as important and needed.
Here is a simple prayer asking the Father for help. You can build on it, add to it, or subtract from it. I ask that you say this prayer consistently throughout today.
“Lord, thank You for being steady and unchanging. Help me to be consistent in the small things and the big things. When I feel tired or distracted, remind me that every step matters. Give me the strength to keep going, knowing that You’re always with me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Many blessings on your spiritual quest to grow in consistency. May the Holy Spirit provide the motivation and determination we need each and every day. Thanks for being with me today. Follow us on Facebook, A Well-Fed Soul and visit the website AWellFedSoul.com to stay connected.
